According to data published <\/strong>by Eurostat, the population of the European Union has reached 450 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Population growth <\/strong>is due to<\/strong> the fact that more and more people are coming into EU countries. At the same time, birth rates<\/strong> remain<\/strong> lower than death rates<\/strong>. This has been happening since 2012. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong>, migration <\/strong>has been rising. 2.3 million immigrants <\/strong>entered the EU last year. Many governments <\/strong>have introduced stricter border <\/strong>controls in an attempt <\/strong>to slow down immigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the EU was founded <\/strong>70 years ago, the community <\/strong>has grown by almost 100 million people. In the 60s, the annual <\/strong>growth was about 3 million, much higher than it is today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germany is the most populous<\/strong> EU country with 83 million people, almost a fifth of the total population. Malta, Ireland and Luxembourg have the highest growth rates, while Latvia, Hungary, Poland and Estonia have declining <\/strong>populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In general, Europe is facing <\/strong>many population problems. Low birth rates are leading to a shortage <\/strong>of workers and as more and more people get older governments must spend more money on health care<\/strong> and pensions<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
