The Dalai Lama, Buddhism\u2019s spiritual <\/strong>leader, has celebrated his 90th<\/sup> birthday in his hometown, Dharamshala in India. He has been living there in exile <\/strong>since he escaped Tibet in 1959.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tenzin Gyatso is the 14th<\/sup> and longest living Dalai Lama in history. He won the Nobel Peace Prize<\/strong> in 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thousands celebrated with him, including <\/strong>Hollywood star Richard Gere, a long-term<\/strong> supporter<\/strong> and friend of the Dalai Lama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the ceremony<\/strong>, which featured <\/strong>singing and dancing performances, the Dalai Lama was dressed in his traditional robe <\/strong>and accompanied <\/strong>by a group of monks<\/strong>. Statesmen <\/strong>from around the world have sent their birthday wishes to the Tibetan leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tibetans believe in reincarnation<\/strong> and the Dalai Lama has announced <\/strong>that only his office will be able to name his successor<\/strong>, who should be born outside of China. In contrast<\/strong>, China\u2019s government insists <\/strong>that it will appoint <\/strong>the next Dalai Lama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
