{"id":579,"date":"2023-10-30T06:24:25","date_gmt":"2023-10-30T05:24:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.english-tutor.at\/news\/?p=579"},"modified":"2023-10-30T06:24:27","modified_gmt":"2023-10-30T05:24:27","slug":"turkey-turns-100","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.english-tutor.at\/news\/turkey-turns-100\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey Turns 100"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Modern Turkey is <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"to show that an event is important by doing something special \">celebrating<\/a> its 100th <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"a date on which something important happened some time ago\">anniversary<\/a> as a republic. It was <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"created\">founded<\/a> out of the <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"what was left of\">remains<\/a> of the <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"large empire made up of parts of Eastern Europe, northern Africa and Asia; its capital was Istanbul\">Ottoman Empire<\/a> after World War I. <\/p>\n\n<p>On October 29, 1923, Mustafa Kemal Atat\u00fcrk  <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"to say before people that something exists\">declared<\/a> Turkey a republic and became the new country&#8217;s first president. Atat\u00fcrk was a nationalist leader who <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"divide, split\">separated<\/a> religion from public life.  <\/p>\n\n<p>He <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"brought about\">introduced<\/a> radical reforms and tried to make Turkey a western-style democracy with a new <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"a set of laws that a country has\">constitution<\/a>.  The country&#8217;s capital was moved from Istanbul to Ankara in central Anatolia. Atat\u00fcrk introduced the Latin alphabet and gave women the right to vote.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Many Turkish <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"a person who lives in a country and has rights there\">citizens<\/a> are celebrating the <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"a day that happened a hundred years ago\">centennial<\/a> of today&#8217;s Turkey. Tens of thousands have visited the Atat\u00fcrk <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"a large stone bilding with the body of a dead person\">mausoleum<\/a> and showed their <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"to show that you admire someone\">respect<\/a> to Turkey&#8217;s founding father.
