The first radio <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"to send out radio or television programs\">broadcast<\/a> <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"were broadcast\">hit the airwaves<\/a> in London in 1922. The BBC started television broadcasts in 1936 , but radio <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"stayed\">remained<\/a> the number one medium <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"in all of\">throughout<\/a> the war years.  <\/p>\n\n<p>In the early days, the BBC broadcast many historic events: the <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"here: the king stepped down from the throne so that he could marry another woman\">abdication<\/a> of King Edward VIII in 1936, the Olympic Games in London in 1948 and the <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"crowning\">coronation<\/a> of Queen Elisabeth II in 1953.<\/p>\n\n<p>The BBC began broadcasting to other parts of the world over <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"a range of short radio waves used to broadcast programs around the world\">short wave radio<\/a> in 1932. Today, World Service programs are produced in 40 languages and <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"can be listened or watched\">reach<\/a> over 300 million people. <\/p>\n\n<p>Over the <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"ten years\">decades<\/a>, the BBC has produced a number of popular shows, many of which have been exported to other countries. <i>The Archers<\/i> is the world&#8217;s longest running <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"television show about the lives of normal people, which is broadcast regularly\">soap opera<\/a>, <i>Dr. Who<\/i>, a science fiction show, has been <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"broadcast\">on the air<\/a> for more than 60 years. <i>Strictly Come Dancing<\/i> is a very popular dance <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"competition between people, to see who is the best\">contest<\/a> that the BBC has sold to over 60 countries.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The BBC&#8217;s <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"what you want to do\">aims<\/a> <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"stay\">remain<\/a> the same as in the early days. Its <a href=\"#\/\" data-toggle=\"tooltip\" title=\"something that you want to do because you think it is important\">mission<\/a> is to educate, inform and entertain.
