Antarctica, the Earth’s most southern continent, is full of natural treasures<\/strong>. Under its thick ice, scientists <\/strong>believe there could be oil, gas, coal, and even gold and other valuable <\/strong>minerals. It also holds two-thirds of the world\u2019s fresh water in the form of ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, countries are not allowed to mine <\/strong>or use these resources<\/strong>. A special agreement <\/strong>called the Antarctic Treaty<\/em>, signed <\/strong>in 1959, protects the continent. It states <\/strong>that Antarctica should only be used for peaceful purposes <\/strong>and scientific research<\/strong>. Another law <\/strong>added in 1991 bans <\/strong>mining until at least 2048.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though<\/strong> mining is not allowed, countries are showing more and more interest in Antarctica. China, Russia, and others are building more research stations<\/strong> and fishing in the surrounding <\/strong>waters. According to<\/strong> experts, these countries, and others, are preparing for future resource use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As climate change<\/strong> melts ice, getting to the continent’s resources is becoming easier. But this could harm <\/strong>the environment <\/strong>and wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The big question remains<\/strong>: is the world willing to protect <\/strong>Antarctica, or will countries try to use its resources? What happens in the next few decades <\/strong>will decide the future of this unique <\/strong>place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
