Easter Island, also called Rapa Nui<\/em> in the native tongue<\/strong>, is a small volcanic island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. It is famous for its large, mysterious stone statues called moai<\/em>, which were created<\/strong> by the island\u2019s people many centuries <\/strong>ago. Easter Island belongs to Chile, but it is over 2,000 miles away from the South American coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are about 900 moai <\/em>statues on the island, some up to 33 feet (ca. 10 m) tall. The Rapa Nui<\/em> people built these statues to honour their ancestors<\/strong>. Historians <\/strong>and scientists <\/strong>still don\u2019t know how the natives <\/strong>moved and raised the heavy stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first inhabitants <\/strong>of Easter Island were farmers. However, as time went on, they cut down too many trees and ran out of resources<\/strong>. When Europeans arrived in the 1700s, life on the island changed even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Easter Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong>. Travellers from all over the world come to see its scenic <\/strong>landscapes and ancient <\/strong>statues. The people of Rapa Nui<\/em> are proud of their special culture and work hard to keep their traditions alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
